    Area of Composite Shapes

    Área de Figuras Compostas

    A garden consists of a rectangle 12 \text{ m} \times 8 \text{ m} with a semicircle on one of the shorter sides. Calculate the total area of the garden. Use \pi \approx 3.14.

    A rectangle 12 m long and 8 m wide. A semicircle is attached outside the rectangle on one of the 8 m sides; that side is the diameter of the semicircle, so the diameter is 8 m and the radius is 4 m. The garden is the rectangle together with the semicircle, not the rectangle with a piece cut out.12 m8 m8 m

    The semicircle sits on one of the shorter sides. Area of a semicircle = \dfrac{\pi r^{2}}{2}.

    Solution

    Step 1 of 3

    1. 1.Rectangle area = 12 \times 8 = 96 \text{ m}^{2}
