Comparing Two Classes with Equal Means

Comparar Duas Turmas com Médias Iguais

Two classes sat the same test. Class A had mean 14 and standard deviation 1.2; class B had mean 14 and standard deviation 3.5. Each class has 25 students. Explain what these two standard deviations say about the classes, and state in which class the single lowest grade is more likely to be found.

The means carry no information here, because they agree. Think about what the standard deviation measures around the mean, and what a wider spread makes possible at the ends of the data.

    Solution

    Step 1 of 5

    1. 1.Both classes have the same mean, 14, so every difference between them lies in the spread.
