Two ordinary dice are rolled and the two numbers are added. How many different totals are possible?

Lançam-se dois dados vulgares e somam-se os dois números. Quantos totais diferentes são possíveis?

    Answer options

    Solution

    The smallest total is 1+1=21 + 1 = 2 and the largest is 6+6=126 + 6 = 12, and every whole number in between occurs. That is 12−2+1=1112 - 2 + 1 = 11 totals — not 3636, which counts outcomes, not totals.
